Hidden Star: Designer Perre Hayes of “Prosperous Features” brand Q&A

By Patrick Hill @Pathill17

Introduce yourself by telling our readers your name, where you from, and what you do.
I’m Perre Hayes (Perry), Born and raised in Alexandria Virginia and I’ve been designing clothing for awhile now.

What made you become a fashion designer?
Growing up, I felt like we had it all. Anything that asked for, it was granted. At the age of 12 we moved and that’s when I realized that we didn’t have it all but mom and dad were just doing their best. Playing basketball and my sister cheerleading. Funds were short. Beginning my 7th grade year. I only had two pairs of pants. Cargoes and a black pair of jeans. So, I began to use old denim. I bleached, used spray paint, fabric glue and whatever I thought looked good. It was one of the best weeks of school. An outfit for the first 5 days and the students help my school year a lot. They bought my art and that was the beginning.

Who inspired you to be a designer?
Author Ashe was a big inspiration to me at first. I was an athlete first. Jan Matzeliger became second major influence. Had to find someone that did what I do, looked like me and faced issues on the to his own success.

Tell us about your brand and what your brand stands for.
The brand is Prosperous Features. Everyone has an interesting feature (talent) that can help us move forward in life and that feature can be very prosperous. We’re focused on a classic and prep-urban wear.

When you look at the fashion market and the competitors that your brand will have to face. What are you expectations for your brand and what separates your brand from the competition?
I haven’t really been looking at the market lately. I’m not looking at it all right now. Don’t want to see anyone’s ideas that may weigh in on my designs. I get ideas from everywhere and I get lost in my own imagination. When it comes to competitors. I’m not worried about them. I have to make us a competitive threat to them. What separates us from them would be our prep-urban wear. Suits and ties are also going to be way different. Bring some old styles back and mix it with today’s style.

You mention old style. You mean look like the 80’s or 70’s?
Maybe the 70’s but not the 80’s. I’m talking the Flippers from the 20’s and 30’s sir.

Okay. It’s funny I was going to post a black history article on the fashion.
Actually, this summer. I have a segment call Black History Summer. Targeting the everyday things that we use every day.

matzeligerandlaster1924

Explain that segment. What things are we using everyday as far as art and fashion?
Jan Matzeliger worked for many years to build a machine that can produce 100 to 700 pairs of shoes in a day.

Have you launch any product so far?
We do have product out Ha! and 1804 shirts and hats are being sold word of mouth until the launch.

When can customers expect your brand to launch?
March 16th is our launch date. June 19th is the launch for black history summer.

On March 16th, consumer can expect to buy your items on the website?
Yes! prosfeat.com

Alright. Well I don’t want to hold you up. Where can people find you to be updated on your work?
Facebook Instagram and Snapchat. We’ll be updating once a month and leading up to BHS. There will be a cookout/community outreach event the weekend be for June 19th. Prosperous Features on FB, @prosperousfeatures on IG and prosfeat1804 on Snapchat.

Guo Pei | Haute Couture Spring Summer 2018 Full Show | Exclusive

Guo Pei is China’s most renowned couturier. For over 20 years, she has been dressing celebrities, distinguished ladies, royalty and political elite who turn to her for show-stopping, magnificent creations when they want to look beautiful and stand out from the crowd.
A modern messenger of her cultural heritage, Guo Pei has breathed new life into embroidery and painting traditions that date back thousands of years. Showcasing the finest of traditional Chinese craftsmanship while incorporating contemporary innovation and Western style, Guo Pei is a passionate artisan who wants to evoke people’s emotions and inspire people through her art.
In the world of Guo Pei, fabric, shape, and texture resonate with meaning. Inspired by fairy tales, legends, and even military history, every creation tells a story and is a canvas for artistic expression, bringing beauty, romance and the designer’s imagination to life. They tell the stories which paintings and embroidery have conveyed throughout the centuries.

ORIGINS OF A COUTURIER
Guo Pei’s lifelong passion for couture is deeply rooted in her childhood dream: an aspiration to perfection, born from the contemplation of beauty. Born in 1967, she started sewing when she was two years old, and quickly developed a passion for dressmaking. In 1986, she graduated at the top of her class from the Beijing School of Industrial Fashion Design and spent the next 10 years designing for major manufacturers.

In 1997 she launched her own label and atelier, Rose Studio, where she has been passing on her savoir-faire to a new generation of embroiderers. Today, she employs nearly 500 skilled artisans dedicated to producing her stunning creations, some of which can take thousands of hours and up to two years to complete.

As Guo Pei’s reputation for high-quality, bespoke designs has grown, so has her influence. From daywear for successful businesswomen to elegant gowns for the red carpet, to elaborate wedding gowns, or costumes for films, the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and the annual CCTV New Year’s gala, Guo Pei is one of China’s most prolific designers.

FROM BEIJING TO PARIS
2015 marked a major turning point for Guo Pei, when the pop singer Rihanna chose to wear one of her designs to the Met Gala, inaugurating the museum’s “China: Through the Looking Glass” exhibition, in which Guo’s works were shown. In July 2015, she held her first solo exhibition at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris; she followed that with a sold-out collaborative makeup collection with MAC. Later that year, Guo was honored to become an invited member of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, the chief governing body of the high-fashion industry, allowing her to show on the Paris Haute Couture Week calendar.
Guo made her Paris Haute Couture debut in January 2016, unveiling her “Courtyard” collection to wide critical acclaim. In the same year, she was also named one of TIME magazine’s 100 Most Influential People and one of the Businesses of Fashion’s 500 most influential people shaping the global fashion industry.

With a new studio on the prestigious Rue Saint Honoré in Paris, and the launch of an eponymous brand, Guo Pei, the future holds exciting possibilities.

Q & A with “Toxin” authors Raynesha Pittman and Quincey Bowen

Q & A with Raynesha Pittman and Quincey Bowen

By Juan C. Diaz @TearsofDiaz

What city and state do you guys hail from?

Raynesha: I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, and Quincey in Memphis, Tennessee but we live in Nashville now.

How has your environment influenced you both as writers?

Quincey: The lack of information on finance that’s available in Memphis has always left a bad taste in mouth. Meeting someone willing to help me put it in a book in hopes to change that was a blessing.

Raynesha: I was actually shielded from my environment by those around but was still a product of it in a strange way. Writing has always been my therapy and get-a-way from it all.

Who are your literary influences?

Raynesha: John Grisham, Terry McMillian, and K’wan

Quincey: Robert T. Kiyosaki and Napolean Hill

What inspired you guys to write Toxin as a team?

Quincey: We would talk for hours about everything and we still do. From finance, spirituality, to relationships and politics. Putting it in a book just felt right, so we did.

As a Christian, I enjoyed how the characters would often quote Scripture from the Bible. How did this help in the creation of the character of Dwayne Hollingswell?

19366505_1868942473119607_2829064322283447506_n

Raynesha: It made and kept him grounded. Having a relationship with the Lord forced him to remain humble. It’s easy to lose yourself when your banking account has endless numbers in it. We had to find a way to keep him from being the typical rich guy everyone wishes they were and a true man of God would be able to do that because flossing his money wouldn’t be looked upon as righteous so to speak. That doesn’t mean we let God keep the problems away as you’ve read in the book.

Was Toxin more a fable of the duality between following the word of God and the worldly pursuit of material wealth?

Quincey: You hit it on the nose! You can only serve one master, and although there is a devil who is God’s nemesis, money also has its share of servants.

The story of Toxin revolves heavily around the Stock Market and its inner workings. Did you guys have to research the Market deeply before writing this novel?

Raynesha: I did a lot of research only because it was second nature to Quincey and I felt so out of the loop. Quincey has study finance since an early age and has been published in the City’s paper for trades he made as a finance major in college. His knowledge of the markets floored me and it still does.

One of the most frightening characters in the novel is one named Cynthia. Can you guys please give us a brief description of her?

Quincey: Honestly, we aimed to leave Cynthia’s description to the eyes of the reader, hence the reason the follow up to Toxin is titled Perception. Cynthia is a very unstable character and we believe everyone has run across a “Cynthia” in their lives whether it was a male or female. The title Toxin was created mainly from this character and when we do give a description of her in perception we hope her physical appearance sends our readers in shock.

If Toxin was ever adapted as a film, which actors would play the main characters?

Raynesha: Idris Elba, hands down would be a great Dwayne Hollingswell

Quincey: I’d go with Gabrielle Union as Nivea Bowen. She has her spunk.

Are there any future projects in the works?

Raynesha: Yes, Perception is the follow up to Toxin that we are currently working on and we also have created a Children’s book series that touches on a lot discussed in Toxin. The main characters are Dwayne, from Toxin as a child and Uncle QB as the mentor of the group of kids. The first book is out and is titled, “The Traffic Light of Finance” and book two, “Building Blocks of Business” is up next.
